Mileage Club

As you may already know, the Brown School Mileage Club is up and running or walking. Students are very excited to be taking part in this great activity. This program is open to boys and girls Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays during recess. Students have the option to walk/jog around the field and for every lap they complete, their cards are punched. After 20 laps (2 miles!) they earn a small “foot” for their chains. These feet can be traded in for larger feet and prizes over time. To date, the children have walked over 950 miles! We are keeping track of our progress on a map in the cafeteria. We are almost to Florida! For every 10 miles walked, students also earn a paper foot for our walls-stop by and check out the colorful path we’re making around the cafeteria!!

Internet Safety

Last month Officer Linda Barker gave an excellent talk to our 5th graders about online safety. Next we will schedule an evening presentation for parents. In the meantime here are some tips.

*** Talk to your children about safe behavior while online.
*** Remind them never to give out personal information while in a chat room.
*** Tell them never to arrange to meet a person they met online.
*** Encourage them to let you know if they feel scared by something they have read or seen online.
*** Remind them that people may misrepresent themselves online.
*** Keep the computer in the living room or family room so you can monitor the sites your child is accessing.
*** Visit your child’s favorite Web sites and review sites where your children post messages.
SPSD Child Find

South Portland has the responsibility to ensure that all students between the ages of 3 and 20 years, (including state wards, state agency clients, students attending private schools in the district, students who are home schooled, and institutional residents who reside within the city) and who are in need of special education and supportive services, are identified, located and evaluated.

If you live in the state of Maine and are the parent or legal guardian of a child with a disability that is covered by state or federal special education laws and have privately placed your child in a private school or a home school program located within this school district, you have the right to have your child located, identified and evaluated by the South Portland School District as a possible special education student, including referral of your child to a pupil evaluation team to determine whether your child qualifies as a special education student. The South Portland School District's child find and referral obligations toward your child while s/he is parentally placed in a private school or home school program located in South Portland are the same as for students enrolled in public school.

Parents, relatives, private school administrators, physicians and other persons who are aware of a child who may require services are asked to contact the Office of Instructional Support at 871-0555.
