Ms Tierney, Mrs. LaRose and Ms Hewitt

My name is Denise LaRose. I am one of the Kindergarten teachers here at Brown school. I have been a teacher for nineteen years. I have taught Kindergarten, first grade, first and second grade multiage, second grade and fourth grade. I am very happy to be teaching Kindergarten again! Guiding young learners as they begin to learn to read is very exciting! I know we will have a wonderful year!
I graduated from USM with a BA in Sociology in 1979. Years later, after receiving my teaching certification, I received my masters in literacy education. Although literacy is always a focus for me, I enjoy the rigors of the math and science curriculum. Two of my books have been published by Shell Educational Company. One is titled Reading Activities & Games for Young Learners and the other book is titled Math Activities & Games for Young Learners. This spring, Teacher Created Resources will publish my latest literacy book. (Currently not yet titled) I am excited about this book because it has many game like activities that are quick and easy to prepare – not to mention really fun!
In my free time I enjoy vegetarian/vegan cooking, walking, reading, and of course writing. But my greatest joy is spending time with my family - my husband, four grown children and especially my three grandchildren! Being an involved Nana keeps me young and focused!
If you would like to know more about my program and philosophy, please check out my website I will be updating it as the year goes on. Of special interest to you might be the online game page which is suitable for Kindergarten and first graders.
Please feel free to contact me. I can be best reached by email at delarose@maine.rr.com or through the school email at larosede@spsd.org
Happy Reading,
Denise LaRose

Hi, my name is Tammy Nason-Tierney. I have one of the greatest jobs in the world- teaching Kindergarten! I feel very fortunate to be a part of the Brown School Community, and a member of the Kindergarten team! I truly believe that Kindergarten is a very magical place- sometimes noisy, often messy and always busy, but most definitely a milestone year for families sending their babies to school for the first time. It has always been my goal for the children in my class to LOVE school. As I teach the children our curriculum, I always try to make learning fun, meaningful and appropriate for a young child!
After completing my BA in Elementary Education, I worked as a tutor in 6th grade at Memorial Middle School. The following year I was trained as a Reading Recovery teacher and also team-taught a multi-age 1-2 at Marsh School. Then, I came to Skillin to teach all-day Kindergarten. I have taught grades K, 1, 2, and 4, as well as Reading Recovery. In 2000, I received my Masters degree in Early Literacy and my literacy specialist certification. I have enjoyed all of my teaching experiences. I am often in awe of the achievements I get to witness everyday as children learn, play and develop, especially Kindergarten students!
In my other life, I am married to a wonderful man, James. We live in South Portland with our three beautiful and very busy children. Jack is 7 and in second grade, Frankie is 4 and Greta 3. We live in an old house that we are slowly renovating. When we’re not working on the house, we enjoy playing outside, going for hikes or bike rides, making homemade pizza and visiting all the grandparents! Besides my family, I love the beach, summer, reading, pedicures, live music, spending time with friends, a great sale, coffee, chocolate chip cookies, and a really good laugh.
And remember, everything you ever really needed to know- you learned in Kindergarten!
